« In order to optimize maintenance operations of rails, we must know the cumulative weight of rolling stocks. It is really hard to obtain this information with the opening to competition » explains Marc Jourdain, SNCF.
Once the maintenance is over, trains operate at relatively low speeds for a while to stabilise the rail infrastructure. The maintenance agents do not have access to the cumulative weight, thus a large safety margin is applied before re-establishing normal speeds.
INTESENS has developed a connected splint bar able to measure rail statistics (time, train weight, number of wheels, overload). When the cumulative weight is reached, the agents are notified. The normal circulation speed is re-established exactly when the cumulative weight is reached.
